Decide whether the slab can be resurfaced

Resurfacing can address some forms of surface wear, but it is not a remedy for every concrete problem. Identify cracks, spalling, movement, drainage, existing coatings and contamination before discussing the finished appearance.

Resurfacing and resin coating are different

An overlay may rebuild or change the concrete surface. A resin coating creates a different type of finish over prepared concrete. The proposal should explain which approach is recommended and why, rather than treating the terms as interchangeable.

Define repairs and preparation

A coating needs sound, properly prepared concrete. The assessment should identify existing paint or sealer, contamination, weak surface material, cracks and moisture conditions. Mechanical preparation must produce the profile required by the chosen system. A coating is not a repair for structural movement, drainage or an unstable slab.

Interior and exterior use

Exterior floors need a system specified for sunlight, water and local temperature changes. Resin names alone do not establish outdoor suitability. Compare the complete system, moisture conditions, drainage and the texture of the final surface. A glossy appearance does not establish safe wet traction.

Interior utility areas and garages still need a review of moisture, traffic and contamination. Product-specific preparation and cure requirements apply to both overlays and coating systems.

Understand decorative options

Texture, color and patterns depend on the selected system and contractor’s capabilities. Confirm the actual offered finish with samples and a written scope. Do not assume every project can receive stamped patterns, staining or every coating family.
